The Antrobus Cabbage Canter Committee regret to announce that this year’s Cabbage Canter 10k, 5k and 3k family running races will not take place.
The decision has been made as a result of changes in the rules concerning road closure. New regulations mean that to close the road we would have to employ a Traffic Management Company to erect closure and diversion signage and to supervise the closures on the day, at considerable cost to the event. Closing the road to vehicular traffic is the only safe option when so many runners, especially children, are using the road. In addition, if the road is not closed we will be unable to obtain our usual insurance via UK Athletics.
The Cabbage Canter is a charity event which raises much needed funds for the local primary school and scout group. We are unable to fund the road closure costs in question.
We apologise to everyone who looks forward to the Cabbage Canter; the children of Antrobus for whom the Cabbage Canter might be their first taste of a professionally organised road race, the seasoned professionals, those new to running but keen to give it a go, those who might be a little past their best but who are still determined to take part, and all those who will miss collecting their hard-earned locally grown cabbage at the end of the race.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has ever taken part, volunteered their time and expertise, sponsored, or provided facilities for the Antrobus Cabbage Canter.
We hope that in future the rules will be adjusted to support healthy, charitable, community based events such as ours, which only make use of minor roads. In the meantime we are leaving photos and results from previous years on the event website for those who wish to remember their finest moments….
